From tropical paradises to breathtaking accommodation, full moon parties and mummified monks; Koh Samui offers more than you could possibly expect from a beach holiday destination. Much like Phuket on the other side of Thailand, Samui has emerged as one of Asia's top getaways for families, couples, backpackers and anyone in between.
It's a tired old cliché ... More>now, but white sands and turquoise waters really do exist all over the island and this is the reason tourists began visiting in the first place! Chaweng and Lamai beaches are the most popular and come with international restaurants, bars, tailors, water sports and the ever-present massages. Alternatively, Mae Nam is another beach with a growing reputation and is considered ideal for backpackers and those on a budget as classic wooden bungalows populate the area. If you're lucky enough to be free of budget worries, we recommend you take advantage of the unbelievably luxurious Koh Samui hotels on offer.
Away from the coastline, take a trip to Wat Khunaram and pay your respects to Samui's best loved mummified monk, Loung Pordaeng, who sports a pair of sunglasses for the occasion. Visit the nearby Koh Phangan for the infamous full-moon party. Warning—if you don't want to see thousands of inebriated young people covered in fluorescent paint listening to ridiculously loud music, we think you should consider avoiding it- it is a spectacle to behold! Stop and think in your Koh Samui hotel and you might just wish you had a bit longer here.
