As a police officer in the USA, I can stomach and handle more than the average person. I have tolerance and am patient with people because it is a trait that veteran police officers have. I am in shape and I am at an average weight for a 6 foot tall male.
I visited the Nakaburi Resort in Udon Thani Thailand as a stop over from my visit to Nong Kai and Chaing Mai. I made reservations for October 29, 30 and 31 through Asiaweb Direct.
I do not have much to say about the front desk customer service or the way inwhich they host their quests because it was cold and very unfriendly. My problem came when I was injured at the resort while walking to the pool.
On the first day at the hotel, I went to the pool to get some relaxation and sun. I had been at a table not far front the shallow children's pool and after 30 minutes of sun I decided I would take a swim in the adult pool. NO I HAD NOT BEEN DRINKING! I stood up from my chair and proceeded to walk off the decking to the pool skirting. I never made it to the pool. As I stepped off of the first level of the decking on to the second level of decking towards the direction of the pool, two of the concrete planks that made up a portion of the deck snapped and collasped beneath my feet. I fell down to the ground below about two to three feet and in doing so, the concrete that snapped, cut both legs and nearly severed a toe on my right foot. I realised that I was injured and that I was losing blood. I pulled myself out of the hole that I had fallen down into and crawled to my chair where my room towel was draped over my chair. As an experienced first responder, my objective was to put pressure on the open wounds where I was losing blood and then seek help from the staff at the resort. By the time I had reached the towel to place compression on my open lacerations, the staffed suddenly arrived and screamed at me to not use my room towel. I was shocked that a towel would be spared while I was losing blood so I complied and waited for the staff to assist me. So, the blood tricked down from my open lacerations and I was wondering why I was here and why this was happening. A young lady who was employed with the hotel had a small first aid kit and she began to dab my open wounds with cotton balls. Thats a No No! What happened was short of what I am accustomed as an American but it is the truth.
I asked that they call the management and an ambulance so that I could be transported to a local clinic or hospital. NO MANAGEMENT EVER CAME AND NEITHER DID AN AMBULANCE! Keep in mind that while I am losing blood, the pool staff is wiping up blood from the decking as to not make it appear as there was much of a problem infront of the rest of the quests that were poolside. While waiting to be helped, I took pictures of the pool decking and tried to determine what had happened and why it happened. What I learned and photo'd were concrete planks painted or stained to look like wood and then fastened to wooden floor joists below to support the concrete. The problem was that there was no rebar or metal mesh in the concrete planks to prevent them from snapping when stepped on. The span from floor joist to floor joist was too far to support any adult weight so hence the snapping of the planking.
A female housekeeper who did not wish to be identified, stated that what happened should never have happened. She said I should complain about what happened.
The hotel driver did transport me to a nearby clinic where my injuuries were cleaned but I was told by the nurse there that I needed to go to a hospital as my injuries woud require sutures.
I was then asked if I had insurance at which I responded, "why would I need insurance, I was injured at and on private property due to faulty workmanship".
The driver then had me walk back to the hotel van and off we went to the Watttana Hospital in down town Udon Thani. Once at the Hospital I felt better that I was at a facility that could give me aid but the issue of insurance kept coming up.
I was taken to the emergency department where my three lacerations were closed with sutures. I was given three prescriptions by the doctor in the ER and told by him to return to the hospital the following day to have my wounds rechecked.
I was then taken to the cashier along with the driver of the the hotel shuttle to satisfy the bill only to learn that I would have to pay for half of the total expense as the secerative management did not give him enough cash to cover the cost of the care. I paid the balance out of my pocket so I could be released and returned to the resort with the understanding I would be compensated at that time.
When I arrived back at the resort, I was asked to satisfy my bill for my stay as the full amount had not been paid. Mind you that I had another day and a half at the hotel as a guest. I argued that when the portion of the hospital bill that I had paid was returned to me, I would satisfy my bill to the hotel.
A female staff member who I assumed was the night auditor told me that I would be paid the following day but I needed to satisfy my hotel bill. I demanded that the manager or owner present themselves to me to settle the matter but was told that they were not available. I then made it clear that I was not going to speak with anyone other than the owner or manager about what had taken place and that they should be ashamed of their professionalism.
As I began to walk away and to my room, I was called back to the front desk and was asked to settle up with them the costs of the hospital bill and the room charges. In pain and discomfort I agreed to do so but insisted that the owner or manager make contact with me ASAP. I was paid back the portion of the hospital bill that I had paid the hospital and I paid my hotel bill a day early. I resumed my stay and the following day I reminded the hotel staff that I needed to return to the hospital at the doctors request to have the injuries rechecked.
The same driver returned me to the hospital and the bill was paid without my assistance.
While there at the hospital, I was told that I needed to return to the hospital the following day to have the injuries cleaned again.
The next day I checked out of the hotel and booked a hotel closer to the airport where I was to depart from and return to Bangkok on Nov 1 . After checking out of the Nakaburi Resort I stopped at the hospital the next day and had the injuries rechecked and cleaned. When I was escorted to the cashier, I requested that the bill be sent to the Nakaburi Resort but this request was denied and I had to pay the bill.
I was never contacted by the management of the hotel or the owner and I have returned to the United States where I am now responsible for the expense of having the sutures removed and the continued medical costs.
I do not expect to hear from the Nakaburi Resort but I think it is important that future guests beware of the care and consideration you can expect from this property.
I did not ask for it but I felt that my stay there should have been compensated by management and I feel that someone from the Hotel management should have met with me about my welfare. THEY DID NOT CARE AND WERE GLAD TO SEE ME LEAVE.
Please share this story with your readers as it is important that resort properties take responsibility for their guests and do the right thing. Thanks
