During the early days of the Doi Tung Development Project, the Princess Mother spent months at the Doi Tung Royal Villa to oversee the Project and occasionally His Majesty the King and other members of the royal family visited her there. Thus, a new living complex was constructed to accommodate the royal entourage and those who worked for the Project. In 1997 after the passing of the princess Mother and with the permission of HRH Princess Mahachakri Sirithorn, it was converted into a lodge offering an opportunity for the tourists to stay up on the fresh lush green mountain.
