Located amongst the traders and temples of Chinatown, a stay at this Shanghai in the 1930s hotel will be unlike anything you have ever experienced - unless you were actually living in Shanghai in the 1930s. The concept design grabs you upon entry to the lobby with velvet drapes, Chippendale leather sofas and chandeliers all laid out like a merchants drawing room. As you sip your welcome tea and refresh with a peppermint-infused cold towel you can appreciate the mix of antique furniture and specially designed faux-vintage pieces that ensure that the execution of Shanghai Mansion is so absolute - infectious, even - you would be forgiven for dancing a waltz through the lobby to your wood panelled door. ... The seven storey Shanghai Mansion may have limited facilities, especially the lack of a swimming pool and fitness centre, but the Gallery is a fun fancy dress activity for all ages, and the vaulted ballroom on the top floor is breathtaking.

The three room types offer the same dreamlike escape as the public areas, with classic upholstered furniture, four poster beds and Chinese lanterns redolent of the past and yet tempered with bold injections of colour to create a playful ambiance. The entry level Superior Room (Mei Hua) measures a cosy 29 sqm, but in that space they have not spared on fixtures. LCD TVs are in all rooms and guests can help themselves to the free minibar, although if you want to relax its more fun to enjoy a game of Chinese checkers or Jenga while relaxing on lounge chairs on the second floor veranda. For something truly extra special, try the unique Suites (Mu Dan) that measure 49 sqm, with a bespoke day bed, latticed wall divide and deep soak bath. The aquamarine, pink and red colours are bold yet the result is pure romance. Shanghai Mansion is absolutely the best place to stay in Chinatown for location, service and sheer fun.

Very central location, All round very good indeed, Including the restaurant & band, Quiet, Staff very polite & helpful, Wifi works fine, Surprise: What you see on the hotel website is what's there! If you appreciate or want to experience traditional Chinese style it fits. Accept the traffic, I recommend use a motorcycle taxi [Extreme Sports] or Tuk Tuk / Taxi.
