Pietermaritzburg Hotels

Situated among rolling green hills and natural forest, Pietermaritzburg was founded by the Boers, after the Battle of Blood River, and taken over later by the British. It is famous for being the place Gandhi was refused his place on a train in the first-class carriage reserved for whites only. Pietermaritzburg�s university also became one of the first open universities in South Africa in the struggle against apartheid. Today, it is still one of the best preserved Victorian cities of the world, and boasts the largest all-brick building in the southern hemisphere, the city hall, built in 1901. It is a very lush and scenic area, from where it takes under 20 minutes to reach Durban and prime beaches along the South Coast.
