Raffles Hotel fully lived up to its reputation-the service was impeccable and the range and quality of food in the many outlets was excellent. Our suite was, as expected, furnished and decorated in the style of an older period, the only negative being a rather tired level of maintenance.

A grand old hotel, but for someone who has stayed in "Raj" (colonial British) properties in India Raffles falls far short in terms of luxury and service. A hotel like the uber plush Taj West End in Bangalore for instance has the same sense of history but in far plusher, modern settings. A great hotel for Europeans looking for a bit of nostalgia but you can get it all if you stayed at say a modern place like the Ritz Carlton and came down to the Raffles for a drink at the Long Bar, a dinner at the Courtyard and a wander around the grounds. We enjoyed our stay at the Raffles but for half the price got much better service at the Club rooms at the Ritz carlton where we spent two nights before checking in at the Raffles.
