Laguna Marathon tickled pink by inclusion of AWD Team

The annual Laguna Phuket International Marathon was tickled pink this year, literally and figuratively, with the first-time inclusion of a team of 28 staff from Asia Web Direct (AWD) participating in the annual charity fundraiser for HOPE worldwide Thailand. The team, 21 of whom completed the 5km Walk and seven declaring themselves fit enough for the 10.5km Fun Run, is from AWD’s Phuket head office, the home of Phuket.com and many other popular hotel and travel information websites. So much fun was had by all – and all that for a good cause – that Team AWD pledged to be back next year in full force.

HOPE worldwide Thailand supports and promotes activities of the Department of Public Welfare and the Ministry of Social Development. In 1999 a Computer Training Centre was established at the Kredtrakarn Protection and Occupational Development Training Centre in Nonthaburi Province, a governmental rehabilitation centre for girls under 18 who are at risk of human trafficking and suffer from various types of social problems. There are currently 348 girls at the centre. HOPE teaches basic Microsoft Office computer skills to approximately 150 students per year.

The Laguna Phuket International Marathon 2008, the largest destination marathon in Southeast Asia, continued to build on the charitable success of the past two marathons. Runners were encouraged to raise money by nominating a charity of their choice, and finding friends, family members or colleagues to sponsor them. It took place on Sunday, June 15, 2008.
