Cape Reinga the top of New Zealand is an hour and half away. This is a place of spiritual significance to Maori known as Te Reinga Wairua (The departing of the Spirits) and Ninety Mile Beach Te Oneroa A Tohe is the path to that destination. Tours can be organised by your hosts or they can give you directions if you wish to drive yourself.
Reef Point is one of the foremost surf destinations in the country and features a left hand break.
