Geylang – Joo Chiat

Geylang is a neighbourhood located east of Singapore's central business district.  In the mid-19th century, this is where the Indonesians and Malays first came to work in the local coconut husk processing factories and eventually, the lemongrass farms.  Most of the shops, restaurants and other establishments in Geylang still exhibit Malay influence. If Malay culture is evident in Geylang, it is Peranakan culture that is best seen in Joo Chiat.  Just like Geylang, Joo Chiat is also home to daytime businesses, restaurants and other similar establishments.  In Joo Chiat Road—the centre of the neighbourhood—one can see Peranakan-style architecture.

However, Geylang and Joo Chiat are most famous for being Singapore's red light districts.  Geylang Road intersects Joo Chiat Road on its far eastern end, and the area is known as home for a number of brothels.  Nonetheless, there is more to Geylang and Joo Chiat than its red-light reputation.  Tourists who want to enjoy the local nightlife but are on a budget will find the cheapest room rates here.  The area is guaranteed safe and is in close proximity to the city and airport.  Moreover, the late night dining options in Geylang and Joo Chiat are exceptional.
