Sihanoukville, which is also called Kampong Som, is situated on a peninsula area that protrudes south and east into the Gulf of Thailand. The city is located in southern Cambodia, about 185 kilometres south of Phnom Penh. In the 1950s, Sihanoukville was initially founded as a sea port and was, at one time a mass of dirty concrete shop fronts. At present, it is the country's most modern city, though a couple of Khmer architectural structures still remain. There is now a wide selection of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and night life establishments in the area. The port is open again, but it is closed to the general public; it serves as a container port but cruise ships also dock here.
The best attraction that Sihanoukville has to offer are its beaches and has become Cambodia's premier seaside destination. Two of the best beaches in the area are Ochheuteal Beach and Victory Beach, but there are others in the area also worth checking out. These include Sokha Beach, Independence Beach and Otres Beach. There are many activities in store for the visitors of Sihanoukville such as fishing, snorkelling, swimming and paragliding.
