EXPERIENCE OLD COLONIAL HONG KONG AT THIS UNIQUE CULTURE HOTEL!

by Fanny Cheuk, Founder of Mingle Place Group

Are you tired of staying in hotel rooms that all look the same all around the world? I know I am. Being a constant traveller on the road, there is nothing I know better than hotels. But of all the hotels that I have ever stayed in, I simply cannot recall any specific hotel that leaves me with an unforgettable experience, while at the same time makes me feel like at home.

Thereafter, I always dream of running my own hotel that creates a unique and memorable experience to our guests.

Originally established as a British colony more than a century ago, Hong Kong has always been the ?Pearl of the Orient? ... [+] More and the ?Gateway to China.? Here is a unique mix of historic Chinese culture and traditional British elegance that you won?t find anywhere else in the world. Add to it the vibrancy of an important international commerce/financial centre as well as one of the largest trading/shipping ports in the world, and you?ll see why no other city is quite like Hong Kong.

That is why you DO NOT want to spend your Hong Kong days in JAHR (?Just Another Hotel Room.?)

As always, start with the best location. Mingle Place by the Park is a mere 5 minutes? walk from the MTR (subway) station, which takes you to everywhere else in Hong Kong. It is 5 minutes by taxi (or two subway stops) to Central (CBD), 5 minutes by taxi (or one subway stop) to Causeway Bay (prime Hong Kong shopping and tourist district), 5 minutes by taxi across the Harbour Tunnel (or two subway stops) to Tsim Sha Tsui (another prime Hong Kong shopping and tourist district), and 15 minutes to the peak (great view!). What is more, 10 minutes? walk takes also you to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, where the largest exhibitions and events in Asia are constantly hosted.

The district of ?Wanchai? is one of the OLDEST settled areas in all of Hong Kong history, being exactly at the waterfront of Victoria Harbour where Chinese junk fishing boats and British trading ships used to converge decades ago. Here you?ll find historical buildings and cultural sites abound... Here you?ll be surrounded with authentic Chinese restaurants and shops (Wanchai is NOT a Tourist Trap area!) ? places that regular Hong Kong folks go... Here, at the heart Wanchai, is the REAL Hong Kong Life ? vibrant, colourful, mixed-cultural, full of energy and filled with contrasts.

Then there is the building itself ? an authentic, vintage 1960's old Chinese residential building with splashes of colonial architectural style (e.g. small balconies facing the main street). It was carefully restored without touching anything that can make it less authentic ? right down to the 60s-style floor tiles and railings, raw concrete walls, basic and simple old Chinese d?cor, and honest 1960?s utensils and toiletries.

You?ll be able to LIVE like how it was lived in 1960?s old Hong Kong. But as with any AUTHENTIC experience, there comes the sacrifices ? for example, rooms tend to be smaller and more crampy ? any less so and it will not be a REAL 60?s Hong Kong building. And there is NO ELEVATOR, which is not available in most 1960?s Hong Kong residential buildings; instead you walk up the stairs like everybody else before you decades ago ? at most 5 stories, the average height of old Hong Kong buildings! ? so if you plan to bring heavy luggage, request a room from a lower floor.

*** WARNING: NO ELEVATOR, REQUEST LOWER FLOOR WHEN TRAVELING WITH HEAVY LUGGAGE ***

But living like it was in the 1960?s does not mean you have to do without the conveniences of modern day technology ? and we make sure that you are well provided for, as long as these technologies are embedded, hidden, and nicely tucked out of the way. All TV sets are 26" flat-screen digital LCD models with high-powered speakers ? gone are the bulky CRT TV's of yesteryears. Climate-controlled air conditioning (heat/cool) is a given. There is also FREE high-speed broadband Internet access (a network port in each room) and complete high-speed Wi-Fi (802.11g) coverage wherever you walk.

Mingle by the Park is also outfitted with an Intelligent Hotel System (IHS), courtesy of Intexact Technologies ? the definitive intelligent building experts. Inside your room, you can enjoy a full selection of music and movie entertainment from the hotel's comprehensive library right on the high-def flat-screen digital LCD TV. If you want to stick to your own collections, just plug your iPod or PC into the audio jacks conveniently located in each room and enjoy your own music through the high-powered TV speakers. Furthermore, a DVD player is provided in EVERY room, tucked nicely out of the way, so you just watch whatever you want to watch, whenever you want to do so!

And the shower is strong, and hot. There is nothing like a good, strong shower to relax you after a full day or to freshen you up in the morning!

Come and enjoy a fresh breath in hospitality that incorporates the most unique cultural experience and best in embedded intelligent technology. Let us serve you and make your stay truly memorable!

*** NOTE: ALL ROOMS IN THIS HOTEL ARE NON-SMOKING ONLY! ***

The staff were very helpful. The room was tight, but that's what I expected. The hotel is actually 2 buildings side by side. If your room is in the building w/o an elevator (mine was on the 5th floor), you need to take the elevator up to the 7th floor, walk over to the next building (outdoors) and then down to your floor. Otherwise, walk up if you are fit enough.

Mingle by the Park was easy to find, although check-in is actually at another Mingle hotel a few doors along. Staff were helpful and polite. There is no lift in Mingle by the Park - room access is via stairs opening direct to the street; this would only be a problem with a large or heavy suitcase.

The double-bedded room itself was compact and clean and just accommodated 2 people and their luggage; wardrobe / cupboard space was limited and the wire coat-hangers were basic. The room overlooked the back of the hotel, so was not too noisy.

Coffee and tea is provided in the room, but the hotel itself has no restaurant or cafe. However, there is an excellent-value restaurant on the ground floor of the same building for lunch and dinner, as well as plenty of other cafés and restaurants in the area. Wan Chai is easy to get to and lively, with small shops and markets.

I would not recommend hotel to anyone. Horrible tiny rooms, sink is so small and stuck between two walls that you cannot lean your head forward to be close to the mirror and shave / No isolation from noise of other rooms, or outside street noise whatsoever. I frankly recommend people to check in in a guesthouse (cheaper and nicer) rather than in this so called 'boutique hotel'. Will never stay in this hotel chain anymore in HK.
