Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is Vietnam's largest city and a thriving metropolis. Originally named Saigon after the river on which it stands, Ho Chi Minh in the early eighteenth century was one of the busiest riverside ports in Southeast Asia. The Saigon - Cholon port still remains a bustling port with a population of about 6 million. Outside the city lie the famous Cu Chi tunnels – 500 km of tunnels used by the Viet Cong in the French Indochina and American wars.
