Poipet in the north west of the country is a typical border town, indeed the most popular land border crossing between Cambodia and Thailand. Every day thousands of people of all nationalities cross between the two countries and the immigration strip is always chaotic, not least because of the several casinos that line the street. More>so Thai citizens travel to Poipet in order to play a few games in the casino, and the Cambodian government has made it easier for them by setting up casinos before the immigration check point into the country. On the Thai side of the border, there is a large market that is reported to have some of the cheapest prices around. Poipet itself is the fourth most populous area of Cambodia, yet most visitors will travel through the town on the way to the majestic Angkor temples in Siem Reap 150 km away. Nevertheless, there are many hotels in Poipet if you need to stay close to the border and typically offer excellent value for money.
