Whether relaxing on your Patio, with coffee or a drink and the papers, or, exploring the island on our free bikes, or, taking our three person Canadian canoe out on the peaceful waters of our bay (where you are almost guaranteed to see large turtle, jumping fish and probably dugong and dolphin too) you will marvel that this island 'sanctuary' is on Brisbane's doorstep. One hour from the CBD - but a world away!!
Mostly, you could have the golden sand beach to yourself. Like all Moreton Bay beaches it is tidal, but a pleasure to swim there when the tide is in. It is sheltered and tree fringed, so safe and shady from mid-day on. There are other swimming spots on Macleay if you prefer company and to follow the sun in the afternoon.
MACLEAY ISLAND INFORMATION:
Macleay is one of a group of four islands comprising the Southern Moreton Bay Islands Marine Park. We are only 1 hour by car and scheduled ferries from Brisbane's CBD or Airport, or 75 mins from the Gold Coast. Limousine transfers to/from Brisbane can easily be arranged on request. Just email us; [email protected]
Macleay is 6.5 kilometres long and only a kilometre wide with a population of around 1450 last Census. Much of the landscape is Australian bush, huge trees and of course the coastal fringe provides scenic spots to view North Stradbroke Island or mainland Australia both a short distance away. The dramatic colours of Sunrises and Sunsets over the water are spectacular vistas.
There are beautiful homes around the coastline appropriate to their enviable location and our climate. Many have boat access directly to their waterfront and boathouses. The inland homes are often 'weekenders' for people who retire here to spend time fishing/sailing/boating etc. There are also a number of rental homes providing to a 'drifting' population.
Should you choose to eat out, the island offers a selection of clubs, hotel and 2 Cafes. Some offer courtesy transport for our guests. There are also takeaway options 300 metres around the corner.
There are two small supermarkets, a chemist, a taxi until 8pm only, two hairdressers, beauticians, physiotherapists, Boat Clubs, a friendly 9 Hole Golf Club and outdoor Lawn Bowls clubs, both with Bistros, a Lions Club, boat repair, Vet, Real Estate agents, Bendigo Bank and Internet Cafe and several other small businesses on our Island.
The island enjoys good Internet Broadband access and mobile phone services with reception for Telstra and Optus being the best. Reception for Vodafone and Virgin services is available at the islands high points.
Macleay has a primary school up to Year 6, a child care facility, but no public transport.
Emergency services include the island's own Ambulance and First Responder and boat ambulance service, SES and voluntary Fire Brigade, Police, Doctors and Dentist and in real emergencies the Air ambulance Care Helicopter conveys people to the nearby Redlands Hospital.
Things to do include walking or cycling the Heritage Trail, or the routes which Yarrandabbi map out for you. Not all roads on the maps connect and much of the coastline is inaccessible due to it being private property.
There are some pretty, small beaches and swimming areas including the safe swimming enclosure at the top of the island at Pats Park (Potts Point). 4 wheel driving is not possible on these Southern Moreton Bay Islands. There are no expansive, surfing beaches and being an inner bay area the beaches are picturesque, tidal, interspersed with rocky outcrops, great for a nature exploring adventure with children.
